Detroit police is looking for a gang of older women that may have taken as much as $500,000 so far using credit cards and checks snatched from purses.
Because of their common head gear, police have dubbed these ladies the Mad Hatters and Sterling Heights Police released surveillance pictures of about half a dozen suspects.
Incidents typically start with the theft of a female’s wallet or purse. Shortly after the theft, the victim’s credit cards and checks are used at area retailers for merchandise or at financial institutions for cash.
One bank alone lost about $200,000.
