Only hours after beating archrival Barcelona in the domestic cup final in Valencia, thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal in extra time (1-0), Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos accidentally dropped the Copa del Rey trophy under the wheels of a parade bus in front of 60,000 celebrating fans in Madrid.
Ramos later said the Copa del Rey is in good shape, but his comments have been contradicted by a Spanish radio station, which claimed the trophy was ‘in pieces’, ESPN reports.
The cup competition was founded in 1902, and since then there have been 12 different trophies. The one that Ramos dropped has been used since the death of General Franco in 1975.
Real Madrid waited 18 years to win back the Copa del Rey trophy.
