Meet André Luís Augusto Rodrigues, a 23-year-old shoe shiner living in a tree in the heart of Sao Paulo, the largest city in Brazil and the world’s 6th largest city.
Augusto cannot exactly remember how long he has lived six feet off the ground, he believes it has been five years now, but remembers why he moved there very well.
Augusto explained to the reporter he was afraid for his life while sleeping in the streets, referring to numerous murders of homeless people in past years.
As a newborn he was left in the trash by his mother, and ran away from the family that adopted him because he was being beaten. He has been homeless ever since, just like 13,000 other people living in Sao Paulo.
